Newcomer youth share their experiences with social justice through art

Newcomer youth from Halifax showcased their creative abilities at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia last week, and shared stories around social justice at the Social Justice in Focus Forum. The project was a collaboration between the Child & Youth Refugee Research Coalition (CYRRC), Dr. Susan M. Brigham (MSVU), Dr. April Mandrona (NSCAD University), ISANS and Youth Art Connection (YAC) in partnership with the Justice, Art & Youth in Action Initiative.

Organizers worked with youth through a series of workshops which provided creative space to discuss social justice, art and activism. Through these workshops, participants learned photography and presentation skills as a way to share their stories and ideas. Participants shared their experiences in front of a crowd of almost 100 people, including newcomer youth from New Brunswick and Quebec. The event was emceed by Halifax poet- El Jones, Nancy’s Chair in Women’s Studies at MSVU, with opening remarks by the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Acadian Affairs & Francophonie.
