Newcomers work with local artist to create exhibit for Pier 21

Our Community Connections and Family Support programs have collaborated with artist Charley Young for an upcoming art exhibition at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in April 2017. The exhibition is called Canada: Day 1 and it considers the role and experiences of new immigrants to Canada.

Charley is an interdisciplinary visual artist working in Halifax. For Canada: Day 1 she is working on a socially-engaged sculptural work that utilizes hand casts of newly arrived Syrian families. In December 2016, 8 Syrian families came together at ISANS with Charley to record the space between family members held hands. These photos give some insight into the first part of this process.
