Why Do You Volunteer With Us?

This week is National Volunteer Week in Canada! We asked a few of our volunteers:

Why do you volunteer with Immigrant Settlement & Integration Services?

“Because I enjoy helping others, because being an immigrant I understand the need, pain and frustrations of building a new life in a new country, in a new culture. Why not to lend a helping hand and help enrich the Canadian fabrics. I believe that most emigrants are hardworking, motivated people looking for the opportunity to build a successful life for themselves and their love ones. Immigrant Settlement & Integration Services is the right organization to collaborate in this endeavour. The people working there have the best intentions at heart to help new Canadians; they helped me when I needed it. So, this is my chance to give back, to do for others what has been done for me!”

~ Wilber Menéndez Sánchez, PhD
Instructor, Academic and Career Connections, NSCC

“I am passionate about volunteering with the Practice Interview Program as I believe in their work and I am a strong believer that everyone deserves a chance to be at their best when interviewed for the job of their dreams.  As somebody who has been on both sides of the interviewing table and has lived and worked in three different countries, I have the utmost respect and understanding for the candidates.  And as they say the practice, makes it perfect.

~ Ellie Walker, Staffing Services, NSCC

“As an immigrant myself, and someone who has re-settled in various communities through my life; I feel I can empathize in some ways with new immigrants. Also, as an HR professional within Nova Scotia, I feel that I am in a good position to be able to offer my assistance in whatever small way I can.  In addition, I thoroughly enjoy working with the team at Immigrant Settlement & Integration Services as well as with their clients. I have met some wonderful and interesting people and enjoyed doing the practice interviews.”
