Thanks to all who came out in the snow for the SupperNOVA Multicultural Potluck on March 5! There were more than 300 people in attendance, who shared food, conversation and dancing!
Special thanks to the dedicated event committee members and volunteers, without whom this event wouldn’t be possible. RBC Royal Bank provided financial support and volunteers, and the Police Youth Group through United Way and their staff joined for support.
We were very happy to see that many newcomers and Canadian born residents came to celebrate the diverse cultures that we have in our community. The event was made more exciting by the fact that about 50 newly-arrived Syrian families attended! In attendance to welcome these new Nova Scotians were: Immigration Minister Lena Diab, Mayor Mike Savage, Geoff Regan (Halifax West MP), Diana Whalen (Clayton Park West MLA), Jennifer Watts (Halifax Councillor), and Andy Fillmore (Halifax MP).
The Latispanica Cultural Association, Korean Drum Group Arirang, and DRUK Atlantic Bhutanese Youth Group came to perform different dances and music. In the last half hour of the event, people got up and celebrated together. New Syrian immigrants, long term and Canadian born residents all held hands in a group dance led by the Syrians. It was truly a moment encapsulating the purpose and meaning of SupperNOVA.
