Remembering the Halifax Explosion

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion. On December 6, 1917, two vessels, one loaded with explosive cargo, crashed in Halifax Harbour, resulting in one of the deadliest disasters in Canadian history. Two-thousand people were killed and 9,000 people were injured.

This interactive from CBC re-creates the Halifax Explosion and the effect it had on Halifax in a virtual environment newsinteractives.cbc.ca/halifaxexplosion. Following the video there is an interactive map with details of what happened on the ships and shore. There are stories and illustrations about first responders, survivors, the lack of relief given to Africville, and the destruction of the Mi’kmaq settlement Maskwiekati Malpek.
