Recreation opportunities play a significant role in the resettlement of new Canadians. Bikes for Refugees is not just about providing bicycles for fun or exercise or transportation, it is about connecting newcomers to a vibrant cycling community.
On November 7 a Bikes For Refugees donation day was held at Cyclesmith Bike Shop in Halifax. Over 175 bikes were collected and stored at Cyclesmith Bike Shop and Killiam Properties.
Later the adult bikes were moved to Citadel Community Centre for phase 2 of the project: Repair.
Thanks to the generosity of Nova Scotians the Bikes for Refugees project has surpassed all expectations! A team of 20 volunteers logged 315 volunteer hours repairing and cleaning 125 adult bikes. Volunteers ranged from professional bike mechanics and cycling community members, to high school students and non-experienced cyclists. Cyclesmith Bike Shop also repaired and stored 75 bikes for young cyclists. Both repair hubs were generously supported by other community partners that provided snacks and refreshments.
Next, the bikes will be inventoried and matched with recipients!
This Spring, the new Canadians and their fully repaired bikes will have the opportunity to enroll in the Making Tracks Programs by the Ecology Action Center. In each session participants learn road safety skills, bike maintenance and rules of the road though practice and coaching from certified trainers.

- Bell $7
- Lock $17
Donations can be made through PayPal or gift certificates purchased at Cyclesmith Bike Shop. Please note physical items won’t be accepted due to program requirements and regulations.
